PAYROLL HIRING CREDIT ALSO KNOWN AS WORK OPPORTUNITY TAX CREDIT                 

The Federal Government provides employers with a federal income tax credits for hiring new employees who meet certain criteria.  Any size employer is eligible for the credit.  Jobs can be full-time, part-time, permanent or temporary.  There is no limit to the number of new hires who can qualify for these tax savings.

The paperwork is minimal.  Add the IRS W-11, Form 8850 and US Department of Labor Form 9061 to your packet of forms that need to be filled out upon hire (W-4 and I-9).  If the new employee checks any of the 5 different criteria on Form 8850, then you, the employer, mail the dated and signed forms to the Minnesota Department of Economic Development, WOTC Unit, no later than 28 days after the new employee’s start date.  You must also include verification of the new hire’s age and proof of residence. The WOTC unit will verify that the new hire has qualified you for the tax credit.
